LEAVES AND FRAGMENTS from medieval (except for art. 12) manuscripts, mostly extracted from bindings; 10th - 16th centt. Latin and (art. 12) English. As follows:-
(1) Leaf from a Pontifical containing part of the Benedictio corporalis and the Benedictio baculi et perae. Double columns with rubrics, and red and blue initials with penwork decoration. 255 mm. × 170 mm. 15th cent. ff. 1-1b.
(2) Fragment of a bifolium from a Pontifical, containing parts of the Ordo ad barbam tondendam, the Ordo ad clericum faciendum and the Benedictio salis et aquae. Written in double columns, probably in England. Rubrics, and initials in red, blue and green. 245 mm. × 160 mm. 12th cent. ff. 2-2b.
(3) Two leaves, not consecutive, containing parts of the Decretals of Gregory IX, I, II, c. vi-III, c. ii (ff. 4b-4), and IV, c. iii-V, c. i (ff. 3-3b); E. L. Richter and E. Friedberg, Corpus Juris Canonici, 1879, ii, cols. 9-17, 36-43. Written in double columns of 46 lines, with rubrics and red and blue initials.

(4) Mutilated leaf containing part of a Latin version of Aristotle, Nicomachean Ethics, I, beg. imperfectly 'Earundem autem honorabilissime permanentiores'. Contemporary marginal notes written in double columns with red and blue initials. 235 mm. ×155 mm. 14th cent. ff. 5-5b.
(5) Leaf containing the beginning of the commentary on I-IV Kings by Stephen Langton, Archbishop of Canterbury (d. 1228); F. Stegmüller, Repertorium Biblicum Medii Aevi, v, 1955, no. 7772. Written in single column with space for an initial, and alternate red and black lines at the beginning. 145 mm. ×140 mm. Early 13th cent. f. 6.
(6) Leaf containing (a) verses incorporating a magic square, beg. 'A me principium non sumpsit venia talis' (cf. H. Schenkl, Bibliotheca Patrum Latinorum Britannica, i, 2, 1892, p. 144), followed by a quotation ascribed to St Jerome, beg. 'Quid coronat in nobis atque laudat deus'; 13th cent. f. 7; - (b) Verses beg. 'Quamvis non scribam faveo scriptoribus', cf. Archiv der Gesellschaft für ältere deutsche Geschichtskunde, viii, 1843, p. 428. Red and green initials. Followed by a palindrome, 'Sumimus merum non murem sumimus'. 200 mm. × 110 mm. (7) Leaf containing Horace, Sermones, i, 6, lines 33-88. Written in single column of 28 lines. 200 mm. × 110 mm. 11th cent. ff. 8-8b.
(8) Leaf and fragment of leaf containing proverbial verses, etc., including 'Si quis delinquit ut Paulus apostolus inquit', cf. Royal MS.

(9) Fragment of a commentary on St. John's Gospel, xiii, beg. 'Qui lotus est non indiget ut lavet, sed est mundus totus. Manifeste denuntiat quod haec lavatio pedum remissio erat peccatorum'. Written in single column in Caroline minuscule. 190 mm. × 155 mm. 10th cent. f. 10.
(10) Fragment of a leaf containing Latin poetry, viz.:- (a) Part of a letter ending 'Te domini salvum conservet gratia semper';-(b) 'Versus Fortunati ad Sindulfum Diaconum';-(c) First line of 'Versus Bellesarii Scolastici';-(d) Last seven lines of the poem 'Romulidum ductor', followed by the words 'Hi versus xv precedentes ante artem Sedulii fieri debent';-(e) 'Versus Alquini ad mensam';-(f) First three lines of 'Versus Damasi Pape ad quendam fratrem corripiendum'. Cf. Wiener Studien, xii, 1890, pp. 318-319, and Schenkl, loc. cit. Written in Caroline minuscule, in single column of 31 lines.

(11) Fragment of a chronicle of Flanders, beg. 'tempore eodem communem misit Boidin'. 195 mm. × 150 mm. 12th cent. f. 12.
(12) Two fragments of the will of - Palmer; 16th cent. The fragments are incorrectly matched: the left hand text line should be aligned with the line above it on the right. f. 13.
(13) Verses beg. 'Oderunt hilarem tristes tristemque iocosi', followed by an outline for the magic square on f. 7 and the words 'onager interpretatur asinus'.

(14) Leaf from a Sacramentary, 11th cent., for the use of a church dedicated to St. Giles, containing (f. 15) collects, etc., followed by the Benedictio baculi et perae. The first collect was used at the collegiate church of St Donatian, Bruges, see E. Rembry, Saint Gilles, ii, 1881, pp. 455, 490. Written in single column of 28 lines. On the verso is the 'Passio Vincentii Levite et Martyris' in verse, 12th cent. 230 mm. × 180 mm. ff. 15-15b.
(15) Two leaves from schoolbooks (or possibly from the same MS.) containing part of the 'Ars Grammatica' of Clemens Scottus (ff. 16-16b) and the beginning of Gerbert of Aurillac, 'De Abaco' (ff. 18-18b). The leaves are written in different hands but have marginal notes in the same hand, which is apparently identical with the text hand of ff. 16-16b. See L. Bieler and B. Bischoff, 'Fragmente zweier frühmittelalterlicher Schulbücher aus Glendalough', Celtica, iii, 1955, pp. 211-220, and, on the small decorated initials, f. 18, F. Henry and G. L. Marsh-Micheli, 'A Century of Irish Illumination', Proceedings of the Royal Irish Academy, lxii, section C, 1962, pp. 120-121. Written at Glendalough, in Ireland; Tuathal, whose death is mentioned in the margin of f. 18, may be the Abbot of Glendalough who died in 1106. 240 mm. × 150 mm. 11th-12th cent. ff. 16-16b, 18-18b.
(16) Leaf containing (recto) the sequence for All Saints as used in the Church of Arras, Analecta Liturgica, ii, I, 1888, p. 251, followed by verses beg. 'Sanguis innocentium quem crudeliter effudisti', 12th cent; and (verso) notes relating to Arras and Châlons-sur-Marne, 13th cent. 205 mm. × 130 mm. ff. 17-17 b.
(17) Thirteen leaves containing works of St. Anselm (mostly abbreviated), etc., viz. :-(a) Part of a gloss on the Catholic Epistles, beg. imperfectly in James II. 23. ff. 19-24 b;-(b) Abbreviation of the Monologion. ff. 25-26 b;-(c) Abbreviation of the Proslogion, cc. 1-9. ff. 26 b-27;-(d) Abbreviations of Orationes, viz., Ad Sanctam Mariam, Ad Sanctum Joannem, Ad Sanctum Petrum, Ad Sanctum Joannem Evangelistam, Ante perceptionem Corporis Domini, Ad Sanctam Crucem. ff. 27-28;-(e) Abbreviation of Cur Deus Homo. ff. 28-30 b;-(f) Description of the pictures in two illuminated psalters known to the writer as the psalters of Sigardus and Leobertus, see F. Wormald in Scriptorium, vi, 1952, pp. 18-25. f. 31. Written in single column of 55 lines, probably in Northern France. 260 mm. × 135 mm.
