JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH: 'Die Kunst der Fuge', Schmieder no. 1080; 18th- 19th cent. Score. Copy, in a German hand. The contents are the same as those of the first edition of the work, Leipzig, [1750-1751], including (ff. 51 b-52) the choral setting of 'Wenn wir in höchsten Nöten sein', the last of 'Achtzehn Choräle von verschiedener Art', Schmieder no. 688, which was arbitrarily printed in the first edition at the end of the incomplete final fugue (cf. W. Schmieder, Thematisch-systematisches Verzeichnis der musikalischen Werke von Johann Sebastian Bach, 1958, p. 607). The pencil annotations and corrections (ff. 5-52 passim) appear to be in the hand of Johannes Brahms who owned the MS. in 1855. Paper; ff. i+52. Folio. XVIII-XIX cent. On f. 1 is the signature 'Joh. Brahms Nov 1855 Hamburg' and the note 'Geschenkt erhalten v. Joh. Brahms. Rud Barth'. From the Farnborough Fund.
