TAVISTOCK ABBEY REGISTER
Memorandum book and register of the Benedictine Abbey of Tavistock, co. Devon, compiled mainly temp. John May al. Mey, Abbot 1402-1422 (to whose period of office much of the contents relate), with additions to 1526. Latin and Anglo-Norman French (f. 29). G. R. C. Davis, Medieval Cartularies, 1958, no. 949. Contents:-
(1) Extracts from court rolls of Hurdwick, in Tavistock, 1289-1371, followed by copies of private charters, temp. Henry III-1395; early 15th cent. ff . 1-8b.
(2) Miscellaneous memoranda, temp. Henry III-1526, concerning enfeoffments, reliefs, homages, pleas, etc., including acta and benefactions of Abbot May; early 15th cent., with additions to 1526. A short biography of May occurs twice, at ff. 15 and 23; its beginning, 'Cui successit Johannes Mey', indicates the loss of some material at these points, since the preceding leaves make no mention of May's predecessors. ff. 9-25.
(3) Copies of charters and memoranda relating to the abbey's tenants, mostly temp. Abbot May; early 15th cent. An extract from Domesday Book for co. Devon is at f. 29b. ff. 29-35b.
(4) Copies of charters, extracts from court rolls, and memoranda relating to the manor of Hurdwick, temp. Henry III-1412; early 15th cent. ff. 36-46b.
(5) Extracts from pleas de quo warranto for co. Devon, 1280-1281; mid 15th cent. ff. 48-71b. Vellum; ff. 71+ix. 325 mm.×230 mm. Early xv cent.-1526. Gatherings, i8, ii6, iii8, iv6, v indeterminable, vi8, vii6 (wants 5, 6), viii8 x8. Catchwords, ff. 55 b, 63b. The manuscript is much decayed and has been heavily repaired; gathering v (ff. 29-35) consists of fragmentary leaves, measuring circ. 250 mm.×l50 mm., with marginal tags, inlaid in paper. Written in several 15th-16th cent. hands, with some spaces for initials and occasional rubrication. Binding (preserved separately), 15th cent., brown leather, the upper side quartered by diagonal intersecting triple fillets over rectangular compartments of the same, the lower side with lozenges made by diagonal intersecting triple fillets over a frame of the same. Binding leaves (ff. i-ixb) from a 14th cent. English noted missal with red and blue initials, containing the Temporale from the eleventh to seventeenth Sundays after Trinity, followed by September Ember days, imperfect at the beginning and end. On f. 2 the following names are written: John Cowne (twice), 18th cent., Philip Bliss, William Allen, and 'William Camplar Gent.', early 19th cent. Belonged, 20th cent., to Edward S. Thorne.
