WILLIAM LAMBARDE, 'A Charge for ye Peace by order of ye Decalogue, or : 10 : commandements of Allmightie God' (title, f.6b): an autograph draft revision of part of the chapter entitled 'Of the Articles that are to be given in charge at the Sessions of the Peace', book 2, chapt. iv, in the 1581/2 edition of Eirenarcha: or, of The Office of the Justices of Peace. The revision consists chiefly of a rearrangement of the articles under the headings of the Ten Commandments, with some additions and rephrasing; it is apparently incomplete, lacking articles for the Tenth Commandment. Written probably in or after 1584-1585 (see Lambarde's note, f. 5, 'Note that all the Statutes 27 Elizab. be not comprehended heare'), but not used in the expanded 1588 edition of Eirenarcha, or later editions. The present MS. is printed in J. Nichols, Bibliotheca Topographica Britannica, i, 1790, pp. 517- 524. On the composition of Eirenarcha (of which an early autograph draft is Add. MS. 41137), see B. H. Putnam, 'The Earliest Form of Lambard's "Eirenarcha" ', English Historical Review, xli, 1926, pp. 260-273. Paper; ff. 6. Oblong folio. Circ. 1584-1585. A cancelled modern pencil foliation, 31-36. Possibly disbound from lot 517 in William Gore Lambarde's sale, Hodgson's, 19 June 1924. F. H. Marcham's cat. no. 5, 1950, item 116. From the Farnborough Fund.
