'THE NEWCOMES' by William Makepeace Thackeray, two pages of the corrected autograph manuscript, used by the printer (a compositor's name and printer's mark appear on f. 2), for no. 21, June 1855, namely:-
vol. ii, chapter XXIX, pp. 266-268, beg. 'We have said that the baronet's lecture . . .' ends 'such a man would assuredly have a chance . . .'. In printing, numerous alterations to the punctuation were made. At f. 1, line 12, the exclamation 'ha!' has been incorrectly capitalized and separated from the speech to which it belongs. At f. 2, line 10, 'insinuates', is printed as 'remarks'. The sale-catalogue entry, f. i (see below), mistook the original pagination of the part, f. 1, for the chapter number. The manuscript of about half of The Newcomes is at Charterhouse School, Godalming, to which it was presented by Thackeray's daughter, Anne, in 1874 as 'all that has been preserved by us of the MS of The Newcomes as it came back from the printers'. These two pages are from a section missing in the Charterhouse MS., in which chapters XXVIII-XXXIX, inclusive, of vol. ii are lacking. Paper; ff. i+2. Quarto. A.D. 1855. Belonged to W. H. Robinson, Ltd., 20th cent.; afterwards lot 2381 in an unidentified sale (f. i). Bound with Egerton MSS. 3709 A,B. From the Farnborough Fund.
