The Barrett Collection of Burney Papers, which consisted originally of part of the papers of or owned by Frances Burney afterwards d'Arblay (b. 1752, d. 1840), novelist, daughter of Charles Burney, Mus. D., and wife (1793) of General Alexandre d'Arblay. These papers, bequeathed to her niece, Charlotte Barrett née Francis (d. 1838), were augmented by papers of Madame d'Arblay's sister, Charlotte Anne Burney afterwards (1786) Francis afterwards (1798) Broome, and of other members of the Burney, Francis and Barrett families. A large portion of the papers was sold in 1924 and passed ultimately into the Henry W. and Albert A. Berg Collection of the New York Public Library. On the Burney manuscripts generally see The History of Fanny Burney, 1958, pp. v-vii, 496-502, and A Catalogue of the Burney Family Correspondence 1749-1878, 1971, both by Joyce Hemlow. The present collection was acquired from Miss Ann Julia Wauchope, great-granddaughter of Charlotte Barrett. Further papers from the same source were sold at Sotheby's on 19-21 Dec. 1960, lots 282-297.
