DOWNING STREET: 'A Mapp of the Grounds & Buildings thereon being part of St James Parke . . . ', made in the Surveyor General's office, showing a house and grounds on the site of the present 10 Downing Street, granted by Charles II to the trustees (Sir Walter St John, 3rd Bart., and others) of the 1st Earl and Countess of Lichfield; 10 Apr. 1677. Formerly attached to the deed of grant, and including a written statement of the area of the property signed by Sir Christopher Wren as Surveyor General, although this appears to be an office copy in a formal hand rather than his own autograph. The grant was part of the Lichfields' marriage settlement, the Countess being the former Lady Charlotte Fitzroy, daughter of King Charles II; see London County Council, Survey of London, Vol. XIV: Parish of St Margaret's Westminster, Pt. 3 (London, 1931), pp. 114-15, 126-8.
