TREBLE PART-BOOK containing twenty-one services by twelve English composers, and, reversing the volume, fifty-four anthems by twenty-three of the same (words only of that on ff. 136b-136 rev.,); 16th-18th cent. Copies, early 18th cent. Indexes of services at ff. 2-2b, and of anthems at ff. 174b-173b rev. A connection with Chichester Cathedral is suggested by the binding and by the inclusion of four services and six anthems by Thomas Kelway (d. 1749), organist of Chichester Cathedral 1733, and one service by 'Dr. Manningham', presumably Dr Thomas Manningham, Bishop of Chichester 1709. 'Call to remembrance' by Richard Farrant (ff. 128b-128 rev.) is here misattributed to Thomas Tallis. Anthems attributed to [John?] Cock, Subdean of [Chichester?] (ff. 132b-132 rev.), James Hawkins (ff. 161-160 rev.), Thomas Kelway (ff. 149b-147b rev.), and William Turner (ff. 122b-121b rev.), are not listed under these composers in M. B. Foster, Anthems and Anthem Composers, 1901. Purchased from Cecil Hopkinson, Esq.
Paper; ff. i+175. Folio. Early XVIII cent. Original paginations, from the front 1-204, from the back 1-140 reversing the volume. Pages 75, 76 are missing from the reversed series but three stubs are visible between pp. 74 (f. 135) and 77 (f. 136). Binding of black calf, gilt-tooled and -stamped, 18th cent. Centre panels lettered on the front 'SERVICES E C' and on the back 'ANTHEMS E C'. On f. i, in pencil, '10/6'.
