LETTERS TO LADY HAMILTON: letters from the Rev. Alexander John Scott, Chaplain of H.M.S. 'Victory', to Lady Hamilton, with one item addressed to her mother; 27 Oct. 1805-19 Feb. 1806. Scott escorted Viscount Nelson's body back to London and the first letter is written from aboard the 'Victory'. All the letters are printed in The Collection of Autograph Letters and Historical Documents formed by Alfred Morrison (Second Series), The Hamilton and Nelson Papers (1893-1894), ii, pp. 270, 272-276. Owned by the collector, Alfred Morrison (d.1897), who may have acquired them at the sales of the Hamilton manuscripts, Sotheby's, 3 March 1886, and of the collection of Joseph Mayer of Liverpool, Sotheby's, 20 July 1887, lot 186, see ibid., i, pp. 1n, 76n. Subsequently owned by Hester, wife of Siegfried Sassoon, Sotheby's sale-cat. 2 July 1962, lot 224. See Quaritch Cat. 843 (1963), item 550 and Cat. 891 (1968), item 868. Purchased from Quaritch with the aid of the Friends of the National Libraries, 14 Dec. 1968.
