GRAILY HEWITT: The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám; 1935

Calligraphically written in gold and blue as an exercise to test different recipes of gilding ground. The blue script serves as a guide to the intended appearance (weight etc.) of the chrysography. Attached, by a blue silk cord, is a small companion note-book containing the recipes used on each page. Inserted (Eg. 3783 A, f. i) is a letter from Hewitt to his pupil A. V. Hughes, Oct. 1935, presenting him with the item and outlining his intent and experiences in producing it. Sotheby's sale-cat. 11 May 1970, lot 67. Purchased 19 Sept. 1970 from the Bridgewater Fund.
