WREST PARK MANUSCRIPTS: miscellaneous manuscripts, chiefly genealogical and heraldic, from the manuscript collections of the Grey and Lucas families formerly preserved at Wrest Park, co. Bedf., which were calendared in the 2nd Report of the Historical Manuscripts Commission (1870), Appendix, pp. 4-9. The majority of the Wrest Park MSS. were acquired from the collections of William Cecil, Lord Burghley (sale-catalogue, 21 Nov. 1687, Heraldry section, pp. 91-92: Department of Printed Books pressmark 821.i.8) by Anthony Grey, 11th Earl of Kent (d. 1702); cf. Bernard, Catalogi MSS. Angliae (1697), ii, p. 392. The collection remained at Wrest Park until the dispersal of the major part in 1922 (Sotheby's sale, 21 June 1922, lots 565-643). Other Wrest Park MSS. include Add. 40761-40764, 46918. Purchased through Sotheby's, 21 July 1974.
Paper. Seven volumes. All the volumes (except Eg. 3795, which is in a marbled paper cover) are in 18th-cent. leather bindings with blind stamping, with the bookplate of Thomas Philip de Grey, 2nd Earl de Grey.
