'NEWGATE JOURNAL': reports on 'The State of His Majesty's Gaol of Newgate'; 29 Apr. 1816- 27 Feb. 1819. Written by the Keepers John A. Newman (1804-3 Feb. 1817; acting Keeper until 12 May 1817) and William R. H. Brown (1817-1822; warden of the Fleet Prison 1822-1842); the reports give the number of inmates, their sex and category, and the number receiving medical treatment together with occasional reports on their general health; they also contain accounts of the state of the prison and 'Particular Occurrences during the week'. The Journal covers the period of the Spa Fields riots (2 Dec. 1816) and a number of entries refer to the authorities' reactions before, during and after the disturbances. Brief references are made to the reception of six rioters (7 Dec. 1816) and to the execution of John Cashman (12 Mar. 1817). The Journal at one time belonged to Nevill Brown (Browne?), 16 Great Tower Street, presumably a relation of the Keeper. W. R. H. Brown (d.1853) was also one of the founders of the Morning Advertiser, and of the Hope Life Insurance Company. Sold at Sotheby's, 17 Dec. 1979, lot 12. Purchased from A. F. Leith, Esq., Harpenden, co. Hertf., 22 Feb. 1980.
Paper; ff. 136.
