PRINCE GEORGE OF DENMARK: letters, accounts and papers relating to the household and estate of Prince George of Denmark, consort of Queen Anne, put together following his death intestate on 28 Oct. 1708; 1686-1712, n.d. Partly copies. Including estimates of his personal estate, and inventories, accounts, etc., relating to plate, coins and medals, jewels, weapons, horses and carriages. Some of the documents were printed in HMC, Townshend MSS, pp. 201-205, and the collection now includes (ff. 105-112) an account of household and stable expenses of the family of Charles, 2nd Viscount Townshend, Aug.-Dec. 1709, signed by his 1st wife, Elizabeth. Prince George's papers were apparently put together by Spencer Compton, afterwards Earl of Wilmington, as Treasurer to the Prince, and acquired by the Townshend family possibly as a result of the marriage between George, 1st Marquess Townshend, and Charlotte, daughter of James Compton, 5th Earl of Northampton. Mounted on the flyleaf is a copy of Nahum Tate's Congratulatory Poem to his Royal Highness Prince George of Denmark (1708). Owned by David Roth, 20th cent. Purchased from Bertram Rota, Nov. 1984.
