SIR WILLIAM DUGDALE, GARTER KING OF ARMS: epitaph for Sir Thomas Herbert, 1st Bart. (d. 1 March 1681/2), and his first wife, Lucia (d. 1671); 1682. Autograph draft. Latin. An expanded version is inscribed on a brass, formerly erected by his widow Elizabeth in the now-demolished church of St Crux in York, surviving in the present parish room. It is described by the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments, City of York, vol. V (1981), p. 11. The epitaph is drafted on the blank verso of a letter (f. 1v) of Conyers Darcy, 2nd Earl of Holdernesse to Dugdale, 2 Nov. [1680]. The verso also includes an endorsement in Dugdale's autograph, 'Sr Tho: Herbert's Epitaph', dated in another hand to '1681', and the pencilled reference number '110623/UMD'. Purchased from Pickering and Chatto from the Farnborough Fund, 26 April 1990.
