ROBERT COOKE: genealogical notes compiled from charters and enrolments by Robert Cook[e], portrait-painter, Clarenceux King of Arms and acting Garter (d.1593); n.d. Copies and extracts. Partly Latin. The present manuscript has not been identified in the inventory of Robert Cooke's writings and books made in Oct. 1593 in Lansdowne 75, ff. 68-74. Purchased from J. L. M. Gulley, June, 1994.
Paper; ff. 15. Leaves of various sizes, roughly stitched into a brown paper wrapper. Watermarks a pot surmounted by a flower on ff. 3, 7 and 9 (compare Heawood nos. 3548-3560), a small fleur de lys on f. 10 and portions of unidentified marks on ff. 12 and 13.
The principal contents are:–
1. f. 1. Grant to Edmund Langley, 1st Duke of York (b.1341, d.1402) of all the lands beyond the Trent which belonged formerly to his godfather the Earl of Surrey, copied in its entirety from the Charter Roll for 21 Edward III [1347].
2. ff. 2-3v, 10-15. Copies and extracts from various charters, those on ff. 3, 3v and 11v accompanied by drawings of their seals. The margins of folios 11 and 11v contain extracts from pedigrees of the Earls of Chester and Earls Ferrers.
3. ff. 4-9v. Lists of nobles attending Parliaments, partly drafts, annotated when copied, and partly alphabetised fair copies. As follows:–
ff. 4v-4. At Salisbury, 25 Edward I [1296]. The fair copy is at f. 8
ff. 5-5v. At Lincoln, 28 Edward I [1300].
ff. 6-6v. At Westminster, 3 Richard II [1379].
ff. 7-7v. At York, 9 Edward IV [1469].
ff. 8v-9v. At London, 27 Edward I [1298].
