LEAF FROM A BOOK OF HOURS: Sarum Use; England; 15th cent. Calendar leaf for parts of March and May, including feasts of Sts Boniface, Felix, Eloy and Germanus. Discovered as a binding fragment in a Book of Hours (Officium Beate Marie) of Sarum Use printed on vellum in Paris, Symonis vostre, in 1512 (B.L., C.192.a.122). Now catalogued as ESTC S105512, formerly STC 15906 (UMI microfilm, reel 134). Transferred from B.L. Dept. of Rare Books, 1997.
Illumination is not of great quality and consists of gilded initials ‘KL’ on a blue and red grounds with golden rinceaux. Feasts are graded in gold, pink and blue ink. The outer borders contain compartmentalised borders with foliate decoration and a central compartment containing a courtly couple riding as the appropriate labour on the month on the recto, and a naked female couple behind a shield for Gemini, the appropriate zodiac symbol. Script is a bastard secretary.
