HENRY ST JOHN, VISCOUNT BOLINGBROKE: sixteen letters from Henry St John, Viscount Bolingbroke, as Secretary of State, to Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Strafford, ambasssador plenipotentiary for the negotiation of the Treaty of Utrecht; 15 Dec. 1711, 3 Jan.-8 Oct. 1713. Autograph. These are 'private' letters, as distinct from the official dispatches which Bolingbroke sent jointly to Strafford and his fellow plenipotentiary, John Robinson, Bishop of Bristol (of which there are copies in Add. MSS 37272, 37273), and must once have been part of Strafford's archive; further large portions of this are now Add. MSS 22183-22267, 31128-31152 and 63465-63475. The letters have been published, apparently from copies in Bolingbroke's letterbooks and with standardization of spelling and punctuation, in The Letters and Correspondence, Public and Private, of ... Henry St John, Lord Viscount Bolingbroke, ed. Gilbert Parke (London, 1798). Purchased at Bonham's, 30 Sept. 1997, lot 259.
ff. 75. 225 x 175mm.
