LAWS OF THE FOREST: reading on the laws of the forests of England and Wales; late 16th cent. Imperfect. Partly Latin. A copy of the opening part of the widely-circulated reading given by George Treherne (d. 1526) on the 'Carta de Foresta' at Lincoln's Inn in 1520 (see J.H. Baker English Legal Manuscripts in the United States of America, II (1990), pp. 237, 331). The text is arranged in sections and includes descriptions of the definition of a forest, the creation of forests by the king, the deforestation of forested land and the administration of the laws of the forest. There are several passages in Latin. The text breaks off abruptly (f. 16v) in a passsage on dogs and hawks. Copies of the whole reading are found in Harl 72, ff. 9-52, Harl 6704 and Add. 48019, ff. 278-313. The text is written in a formal secretary hand and the opening words of paragraphs and marginal notes are calligraphically elaborated. Many of these opening words are decorated with foliate and floral designs in red and green penwork. On f. 17v is an unusual, circular heraldic device, encircled by a garter-like band, which bears the motto 'Deus omnipotens beata regina no[s]tra'. Purchased from Sam Fogg, 14 March 1997.
Paper; f. iv+17. 305 x 203mm. A single gathering of 18 leaves (lacks 17). Margins ruled in red. Modern white parchment binding. All margins damaged, but with little loss of text.
