CERAMIC BOWL WITH TALISMANIC INSCRIPTION: Iraq, 5th cent.- 8th cent. A.D. Such items, carrying curses or magical inscriptions, were frequently buried under thresholds to avert evil spirits from the home. Purchased of Sam Fogg, 1997, as part of the newly established ‘history of writing’ collection, initially exhibited as part of the ‘story of writing’ exhibition in the new BL galleries at St Pancras, 1998.
