SIR HENRY ELLIS: private and official letters to Sir Henry Ellis K.H., (b.1779, d.1869), Principal Librarian of the British Museum, mostly on antiquarian matters and frequently relating to his duties at the British Museum; 1812-1866, n.d. A few letters bear Ellis's draft replies. The writers include Charles Burney, Sir Anthony Panizzi, Joseph Hume M.P., Lord Farnborough and Michael Faraday. Also included is an alphabetical list of the writers, giving brief biographical details and summaries of the letter contents. The list was apparently made by F. L. Bickley, son of a former Assistant Keeper in the Department of Manuscripts. Purchased at Sotheby's, 22 July 1988, lot 526.
