CASTLETON, CO. DERBY: plans and notes relating to estates held in Castleton and the surrounding area by the Bagshaw family, 'Mr Oddy' named as surveyor on one plan and 'JB' on two others; mid 17th cent.-1828. Scales vary. Partly drafts. The papers represent the working notes, drafts and plans of surveyors working on the estates of the Bagshaw family in and around Castleton. Most of the drafts and plans are of land held by the Bagshaws' tenants: these include field names and tables of areas. A draft and three finished plans (ff. 12-14v, 71v) indicate houses and streets in Castleton, with buildings shown in perspective. 'Mr Oddy', named as the surveyor on the 'Sketch of Spittal field at Castleton' (ff. 6-6v), is Matthew Oddie, active as a surveyor in Cheshire, Lincolnshire and the West Riding of Yorkshire in the years 1770-1794; JB's initials appear on 'A map of Knotlaw estate belonging to R Bagshaw' (f. 8), and 'An exact survey and map of the turnpike road intended to be cut from Stock House to Slate Bridge', (f. 74). 'JB' is possibly John Beighton, recorded as a surveyor in Derbyshire in the mid 18th century. See P. Eden (ed.), Dictionary of land surveyors and local cartographers of Great Britain and Ireland 1550-1850 (Folkestone, 1975-1979), pp. 33, 193. He appears to be responsible for the sequence of drafts and plans relating to tenants' landholdings (ff. 54-68v). As well as using leaves from a note book, he filled blank spaces on his draft plans with working notes and reminders. Three members of the Bagshaw family are named, John, Richard and William. These are likely to be either the sons of Adam Bagshaw of Wormhill Hall, Richard (b.1674, d.1750), William (b.1679, d.1751), and John (b.1681, d.1737), who was British consul at Genoa, or Richard's sons, Richard (b.1705, d.1776), William (b.1713, d.1785), and John (b.1715, d.1791). All three of the younger generation died without issue and the estates were left to a first cousin twice removed and then a great-nephew. Legal complications arising from bequests of property to relations who were not direct descendants and the fragmented nature of the tenant holdings may have occasioned the need for the survey, which brought together old papers relating to the estates (see the mid 17th-cent. notes, ff. 40-42v) with plans newly surveyed. For further details of the Bagshaws, see William H. G. Bagshawe, The Bagshawes of Ford: a biographical pedigree (1886). For other documents relating to the Bagshaw family estates, chiefly concerned with Richard Bagshaw the elder's mining interests, see Add. 6675, 6678, 6680-6683, and 6685. Purchased from J. M. L. Gulley, Esq., June 1988.
Ink and pencil on paper; ff. 74 + 54*, 56*. Sizes of sheets vary, largest 420 x 795mm.
