'THE WRECKERS': opera by Ethel Smyth, (words, H. B. Brewster, English translation by the composer and Alma Strettell) ; circa 1906-1939. Copyist's full score, annotated libretti, and other performance material. With autograph annotations. Partly German. The opera, in three acts, was composed in 1903-1904 to Brewster's original French libretto as 'Les Naufrageurs', and first staged in Leipzig in 1906 in German as 'Strandrecht'. The English text was produced for the first English stage performances in 1909. Further stage performances in England took place in 1910, 1931, and 1939. The autograph full score is Add. 45939-45941. Vocal scores published with French and German words, Leipzig: Breitkopf and Härtel, 1906 and, after revision with English and German words, London: Forsyth Brothers, and Vienna: Universal Edition, 1916. The prelude to Act II published in full score as 'On the Cliffs of Cornwall', London: Novello, 1909; the overture published in full score, London: Breitkopf and Härtel, 1911. Purchased from Richard Macnutt Ltd., 16 Sept. 1988.
