THOMAS GRINDLAY: working manuscripts, testimonials and related papers of the geographer Thomas Grindlay (b.1869, d.1947); circa 1900-1926. The manuscript maps are writing copies for engravers and were prepared, in the early years of this century, for atlases published by W. and A. K. Johnston and The London Geographical Institute (George Philip & Son Ltd.). Many contain alterations and marginal notes in Grindlay's hand. They are drawn with coloured inks and watercolours on stiff paper, card, or onion skin paper. The maps are from a portfolio of samples of his early work submitted by Grindlay to the Natural Resources Department of the Canadian Government in 1908 as evidence of his qualifications for the post of geographer. Purchased of Russborough, Catalogue 2, 1979.
