THE ASCOTT ALBUM: collection of cuttings from eight illuminated manuscripts; 13th-16th cent. All traceable to the collection of William Young Ottley (see Sotheby's sale-catalogue, 11 May 1838). With the exception of items 1 and 6, all were then purchased by Sotheby. Items 1 and 6 passed to the Rev. John Fuller Russell. Bookplate (f. 1) of Rothschild of Ascott, Wing, co. Bucks. Purchased of the Rothschild family, 26 March 1979.
Vellum and (ff. i and 11) paper; ff. i+42. The cuttings are mounted on boards and are as follows:
1. f. 1. Scenes from the life of David, from a Psalter illuminated in Germany; 13th cent. (Lot 14 of Ottley's 1838 sale). Another leaf from the same manuscript is Add. 17864 A.
2. ff. 2, 3. Two cuttings from border decoration illuminated in Italy; 15th cent. From lot 136 of Ottley's sale.
3. ff. 4-7. Four cuttings from border decoration illuminated in France; late 15th cent. From lot 136 of Ottley's sale.
4. ff. 8 and 33-42. Twelve cuttings from a manuscript written and illuminated in Italy for Pope Leo X (1513-21); early 16th cent. The decoration includes the Pope's initials and device and several small miniatures. From lots 203 and 209 of Ottley's sale. Further fragments of the same manuscript are in Add. 21412.
5. ff. 9 and 19-32. Fifteen cuttings from manuscripts made in Italy for Cardinal Antoniotto Pallavicini (1489-1507); circa 1500. The decoration includes the Pallavicini arms and several small miniatures. From lots 204-208 of Ottley's sale. Further fragments are in Add. 21412.
6. f. 10. Miniature of the dedication of a church, by the Master of the Murano Gradual, probably at Venice; mid 15th cent. For other works by whom see C. Nordenfalk (ed.), Medieval and Renaissance Miniatures from the National Gallery of Art (1975), pp. 70-74. On the verso, Luke 10:42, with musical signs. Lot 39 of Ottley's sale.
7. f. 12. Miniature of the Coronation of the Virgin, illuminated in Italy, from a manuscript formerly in the convent of St Jerome at Palermo; mid 15th cent. An accompanying note by Ottley (f. 11) attributes it to 'Peter Peruginei' [Pietro da Perugia ?]. On the verso, Ps. 109:2-4. Lot 190 of Ottley's sale.
8. ff. 13-18. Six cuttings from border decoration illuminated in Italy; late 15th cent. Similar borders in the Brinsley Ford Collection have been connected with books made for Pope Innocent VIII (1484-92). Lot 199 of Ottley's sale.
