SIR PETER THOMPSON (1698-1770), F.R.S., M.P.: commonplace book; circa 1725-1763, with some blank leaves (ff. 35v-96) containing newspaper cuttings of 1860s. Partly printed. Partly Latin and French. The contents comprise antiquarian items, including pedigrees, epitaphs, extracts and copies of treatises, letters, newspaper articles, etc., together with verse and prose on current political, satirical and religious, particularly dissenting, topics. At ff. 19-29 is a copy, 23 June 1734, of 'An Essay towards the History of Printing in England', by John Lewis; Lewis and Thompson were friends and mentors of Joseph Ames, the bibliographer; a letter and verses addressed to Ames by Robert West of Putney are pasted at the beginning of the volume (f. 2). An annotated sale catalogue of Thompson's library is at press-mark 821.g.30(1); see also H. S. Thompson, in Notes & Queries for Somerset & Dorset, 18 (1924-1926), pp. 110-113. Purchased from William Hoffer, 20 Dec. 1985.
