HENRY STANLEY, 4TH EARL OF DERBY: collection of letters and papers on affairs of state, etc.; circa 1583-1589. Copies in the hand of a secretary in Derby's household. A description of the manuscript, including a number of items now missing from leaves that originally stood before the present f. 1 and between ff. 106v and 107, was given by William Oldys in The British Librarian, no. 5, May 1737, pp. 270-286. Owned, before 1729, by Peter Le Neve (f. i verso); in 1737, by Nathaniel Booth of Gray's Inn (f. 119v); in 1820, by the bookseller Thomas Thorpe (sale-cat. 1820, pt. 1, item 2); and, after circa 1824, by Sir Thomas Phillipps (MSS. 19 and 3602: cf. labels pasted at foot of spine). Purchased from Pickering and Chatto, 9 April 1986.
Paper; ff. ii+119. 265 x 196mm. Originally twelve quires as follows: [gathering of 12 leaves now wanting], ii10, iii-vi12 (vi.1 a stub), vii12, viii14 (wanting 4, 14), ix12, x12, [gathering of 12 (?) leaves now wanting], xii12. For the copyist, cf. the same hand in letters of Derby dated between 19 Aug. 1586 (Add. 12506, f. 29) and July 1592 (Harley 6995, f. 83). Watermark similar to Heawood no. 2571. Limp vellum cover with (f. i) a circular label bearing an undeciphered number, a note in ink relating to the contents of the manuscript, and on the spine a partly-obscured numbering in ink '3[ ]B'.
The principal contents are:
1. ff. 3-5. 'The Booke of the whole Navie'; 27 Dec. 1585. A list of English ships with their manning-complements.
2. ff. 6-17v. 'An Analogie or resemblance between Jone [ie. Joan II] / Queene of Naples and Marie Queen of Scotlande', with a supplement; circa 1584-1589.
3. ff. 20-48v. 'Liber Pacis 1584', a list of Justices of the Peace in England and Wales.
4. ff. 51-61. List of ships in five ports of Cheshire and Lancashire, namely Chester, Preston, Liverpool, Wyre Dock and the 'Peel of Foudre' [Peel Island, Furness], etc.; Feb. 1586/7.
5. ff. 66v, 67, 72-73v. Papers relating to the garrisons of Peel and Rushen Castles, Isle of Man; circa 1587-1588.
6. ff. 68, 68v, 86-94v, 97v, 109v, 112v. Accounts, etc., relating to the estates and revenues of Henry, 4th Earl of Derby; 1583-1589, n.d.
