JOHN RAMSAY: autograph letter-book of Lt.-Col. John Ramsay (d. 1845) as British commissary with the Russian army in Switzerland, Germany and Austria under General Korsakov, with the Swiss Corps and with the French emigré army under the Prince de Condé; 14 July 1799-10 July 1801. The majority of the letters are addressed to the Foreign Secretary, Lord Grenville, with several to Thornton and Power, bankers of Hamburg, and two letters (ff. 128v-126v vol. rev.) to Lord Minto, Minister Plenipotentiary in Vienna. Also included (ff. 131v-130v vol. rev.) are notes on [Carl?] Ewald's Petite Guerre. Ramsay's original letters to Grenville do not seem to have survived among his papers (Add. 58855-59494) though related material is contained in Add. 58945, 59011-59015, 59024, 59028, 59052, 59053, 59061, 59076, 59077, 59080. Purchased from Richard Hatchwell, Cat. 26, item 129, Oct. 1986.
