THE ASLAKE WORLD MAP
- Scope & Content:
-
63841. Fragments of an anonymous world map with related items; probably of the third quarter of the 14th cent. From the late 15th cent. until after acquisition by the British Library, the fragments served as binding for a rental relating to the lands of Walter Aslake, primarily in Holme next the Sea, co. Norfolk. For a full discussion of the map and its significance, see Peter M. Barber and Michelle P. Brown 'The Aslake World Map' in Imago Mundi 44 (1992), pp. 24-44. Circumstantial evidence suggests that the map may have been housed at Creake Abbey, Norfolk, prior to the fire of 1483 (see A. L. Bedingfield (ed.), A Cartulary of Creake Abbey (Norfolk Record Society, vol. xxxv, 1966, pp. xxi-xxii, xxxi-xxxii). The rental appears to have remained in the possession of Aslake's successors as lords of Berry's manor, Holme next the Sea, after 1484. The lord of the manor in 1806 was one Mr Case of Mildenhall, co. Suff. (F. Blomefield, An Essay towards a topographical History of the County of Norfolk, 1805-1810, x, p. 329). He may perhaps be identified with Philip James Case (b.1769, d.1855), great-grandfather of Isham Herbert Case (b.1866), on whose death the rental, with other family and manorial documents passed to Gwendoline Pullen (niece of his wife, Helen Isham, née Walker), and on her death circa 1977, to her cousin, Joyce Ovenden née Louis. Purchased from Mrs J. Ovenden, Oct. 1985.
