RICHARD MULCASTER: letter to Abraham Ortelius, with verses; 24 April 1581. Latin. The text of the whole is printed in J. H. Hessels (ed.) Abrahami Ortelii . . . et virorum eruditorum ad eundem . . . Epistulae (Cambridge, 1887), pp. 249-252, no. 104, a copy of which is bound with the manuscript at ff. i-v. The eighteen Latin elegiac couplets 'Ad librum suum Autor ipse', beg. 'Insita naturae nostrae sitis illa iuuandi', were first printed in Mulcaster's Positions wherin those primitive circvmstances be examined, which are necessarie for the training vp of children . . . (1581, entered in the Stationers' Register on 6 March). Owned, circa 17th cent. to after 1887, by the Consistory of the Dutch Church in London: see Hessels, ed. cit., pp. ix-xvi. Purchased at Sotheby's, 18 Dec. 1986, lot 6.
