CHINNERY JOURNALS: journals of continental tours by George Robert Chinnery (b.1791), Assistant Clerk at the Treasury and secretary to George Canning; 1819-1820. Mostly autograph fair copies. The other members of the party were George and Mrs [Joan] Canning, the Cannings' children Charles, John and Harriet, and Lady Harriet Bentinck. All three volumes incorporate later additions and alterations, some in pencil. The background to the tours is given in Joscelyn Bagot, George Canning and his Friends (1909), ii, pp. 101, 103 and in Peter Dixon, Canning Politician and Statesman (1976), pp. 193-194, 199-200. Purchased from Winifred Myers (Autographs) Ltd., Cat. 13, item 120, Jan. 1987.
