Illustrated description in epistolary form of France, Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Portugal and England by Louis Jérôme de Goujon de Thuisy, Commander of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem; 1778-1806, with annotations extending at least to 1819. Mostly autograph fair copies. Mostly French, partly Italian and English. The author's identity can be established from internal evidence, the text containing scattered autobiographical references, from his letter to William Windham of 1802 (Add. 37869, f. 9) and cf. Nicolas Viton de Saint Allais, L'Ordre de Malte, Ses Grand-Maîtres et ses chevaliers (Paris, 1839), pp. 286, 353. The text includes detailed accounts of leading artists, sculptors, engravers and literary figures as well as of the sights and antiquities and is illustrated with numerous engravings, with a few watercolours, drawings and maps, also words and music for songs. Each volume concludes with a table of contents. Purchased at Sotheby's, 27 Jan. 1987, lot 834.
