HENRY BRYDGES, ARCHDEACON OF ROCHESTER: notebook of academic themes and exercises, etc., in prose and verse, attributed to him; circa 1691-1695. Mostly autograph fair-copies: cf. Add. 61999. Latin. While consisting largely of set-pieces composed during an undergraduate course of study at Christ Church, Oxford, between 1691 and 1695, the notebook includes transcripts of eighty-six carmina quadragesimalia (ff. 40v-57) or Act Verses, apparently written by the collector's contemporaries, possibly in 1695, the year in which Brydges took his B.A. degree. For similar collections of 104 sets, dating from circa 1696-1700 and copied by Gabriel Richards of Oriel College, see Add. 42611, and of 38 sets, the last imperfect, dating from circa 1717-1719, see Add. 38671, ff. 57-63. Several of the prose pieces include addresses 'Ad Decanum' (ff. 18v, 23v-24, 57), that is, to Henry Aldrich, Dean of Christ Church; 'Ad Doctorem Montague' (ff. 19-19v), probably John Montagu D.D., Master of Trinity College, Cambridge; and 'Ad Doctorem Altham' (ff. 19v-20), Roger Altham, D.D. 1694 and Regius Professor of Hebrew. One set of verses (f. 23v) composed 'In reditum Decani West-monasteriensis', is addressed to Thomas Sprat, simultaneously Bishop of Rochester. A note written in an unidentified 18th-cent. hand on f. ii identifies the author and copyist as Brydges, whose mature hand is seen in his diary, 1717-1728, now Add. 61999. Purchased from Farahar and Dupré, Cat. 14, item 14, Jan. 1987.
Paper; ff. ii+57. 180 x 115mm. Watermark: Strasbourg lily in crowned shield. Contemporary binding of brown calf.
