SHEFFIELD PEDIGREE: genealogical roll with arms in colour tracing the descent of John Sheffield (m. Elizabeth Petwyn; d.1533) of Seaton, co. Rutl.; circa 1500. Latin. Beg. with Simon de Senlis (St Liz), knight, son of Richard Balascarn and Anne his wife (temp. Will. I?); also included is a collateral branch of the Sheffield family descended from Alice (daughter of Elizabeth de Senlis and William Sheffield), who married William Sympson of Keythorpe, co. Rutl. (temp. Hen. V). A continuation (membrane 4) in an early 17th-cent. hand extends the pedigree to Robert Sheffield (d.1602). See V.C.H. Rutland, ii, pp. 215-216. Belonged in 1612 to Nicholas Charles, Lancaster Herald (d.1613), who has annotated the roll and added the arms of Simpson. For the use of the present roll by Richard Mundy, arms painter (fl.1639), to augment heraldic visitation sources when compiling a pedigree of Sheffield, see Harley 1558, ff. 28v-29. Purchased from Alan G. Thomas, Cat. 49, item 33, April 1987.
Vellum; 4 membranes. 115mm. x 2m. (tapering at the beginning). Fastened with a contemporary knotted leather thong.
