LOGBOOK OF 'H.M.S. BRITANNIA': a record of her service, kept by her commander Captain James Bradby, with the Channel Fleet under Vice-Admiral George Darby, and while participating in the (second) relief of Gibraltar during April 1781; 9 June 1780-13 Aug. 1781. Inserted at the end of the log are: (f. 79) a wash drawing of ships of the line in battle, with names, and on the reverse a coloured drawing of the arms of St Lucia and a pencil sketch of the arms of Martinico; (ff. 80-81) a pen and wash map of 'Gros Islet bay, St Lucia' showing depths of water, together with wash drawings of an unnamed bay, probably Gros Islet, and sections of two islands, one being Dominica, the other probably St Lucia. The maps and drawings are undated and anonymous; the map has 'Scale of one mile' (= 3 inches), 1:21120. For Darby, see also Add. 38681-38682. Purchased at Sotheby's, 17 Dec. 1975, lot 738.
