PSALTER-HOURS produced in England, possibly London; after 1457. Latin. The calendar indicates a possible London connection (for example, Bishop Erkenwald (30 April), and includes St Osmund (4 Dec.) who was canonised in 1457. Ownership inscriptions of John Nettleton of Hutton Cranswick, E.R., co. York in 1567 (f. 7v; Nettleton may also have owned Add. 31042 etc., see Index of Manuscripts in the British Library vol. vii, 1985), Katharine Sutcliffe, 16th cent. (f. 141), Robert Hesketh, 1621, Thomas Barkham, 1698, and Richard Dixon, 1740 (f. ii), Thomas Gregs, 1715 (f. iii) and Michael Fleming, 1810 (f. 7). Bookplates of the Earl of Ashburnham, 1897 (f. ii), Ashburnham Appendix no. CCXXXI, and of Major J. R. Abbey (f. iii verso). Purchased of Alan G. Thomas, 9 March 1977.
Vellum; ff. v+144. Sec. fol.: 'marcius habet dies'. 195 x 110mm. 14th cent. pastedowns (ff. i and v), with 1 modern paper and 3 original vellum flyleaves to front and 4 original vellum flyleaves to back. Gatherings (18) of 8, except i6, xvii6. Ruled (single bounding lines) in ink for single columns of 29 lines. Written space: 130 x 67mm. Script is a Gothic textualis quadrata by one hand. Quires marked on first recto with single letters (a-k ink, l-t pencil). Spaces left for initials, with some guide letters. 16th cent. English brown leather blind-stamped binding with foliate panels. Sewn on 4 cords.
