BREVIARY: of Sarum Use, produced in England, in the diocese of Norwich; circa 1450. Latin. See F. Procter and C. Wordsworth, Breviarum ad usum insignis ecclesiae Sarum (1879-1886). The calendar includes an original entry for the dedication of Norwich Cathedral (24 Sept.). Additional calendar entries, for example the translation of St Etheldreda (17 Oct.) and the feast of St Withburga (17 March), indicate subsequent use in the diocese of Ely. A note (f. i verso, 19th cent.?) records this information and also a provenance of Culford Hall, co. Suff., seat of Earl Cornwallis. From the collection of the Rev. E. Dewick. Purchased of Alan G. Ruled (single bounding lines) in ink for double columns of 32 lines. Written space: 111 x 70mm. Script is a Gothic textualis quadrata by several hands. Catchwords, leaf signatures and guide letters. English brown leather blind-stamped binding with foliate panels, by R. Pynson, circa 1500. Two clasps (missing). Sewn on 5 split cords.
Decoration consists of a foliate initial D with fleshy acanthus ornament and partial border (f.1) in gold and colours (notably pastel blue and pink). Other major decoration excised. Minor initials in blue with red flourishing.
