Title:

ROBERT STYWARDE OF ELY (d.1570): illuminated attestation by William Harvey, Clarenceux King of Arms 1557-1567, of Robert Stywarde's genealogy and right to arms; 1558. Latin. Seal missing. The attestation supports Stywarde's claim of descent from the Scottish Royal House of Stewart and right to bear the Stewart arms. A copy with different arms is Add. 15644, ff. 63-68v, which forms part of a collection compiled by Augustine Stywarde, Robert's brother. The present document is discussed in British Heraldry from its Origins to c.1800, ed. R. Marks and A. Payne (1978), No. 143, and the fraudulent claims of the Stywarde family in J. H. Round, Studies in Peerage and Family History (1901), pp. 134-144. Further information on the family is given in C. E. Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), pp. 315-316. Inscribed '24994' on the reverse. Purchased of Alan G. Thomas, 14 March 1977.

Included in the illumination are a genealogical tree of descent of Robert Stywarde from Banquo, a depiction of the legend of Stywarde's ancestor's fight with the lion of Balliol (cf. Add. 15644, ff. 60v, 72 and Lansdowne 874, f. 94v) and an initial full-length portrait of William Harvey. The whole document is framed by a double illuminated border of flowers, insects and birds placed on an imitation gold ground.
