WILLIAM COWPER: copy of his autobiographical memoir; 1815. The text is substantially that published posthumously in 1816 and reprinted in M. J. Quinlan, 'Memoir of William Cowper: an autobiography', Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society, 92 (1953), pp. 366-382. Descriptions of five further copies of this version, omitting the present manuscript, are given in J. King and C. Ryskamp, The Letters and Prose Writings of William Cowper (Oxford, 1979-1886), i, pp. xxvi-xxvii. Also described there is a Bodleian manuscript of an earlier unexcised text of the memoir on which they base their edition (ibid., i, pp. 5-47). A partially erased inscription (f. 38v) 'Finished this copy Sept. 1815' is followed by an illegible erased signature. Purchased of Stern and McDowell, of York, 7 March 1977.
