COLLECTION OF PIECES FOR SOLO LYRA VIOL; mid 17th cent.-circa 1680. The named pieces in tablature include ones by Charles Coleman, Drew, John Esto, Sir Edward Golding, J. Grome, Simon Ives, John Jenkins, William Lawes, John Lilly, Thomas Mace, Steiffkins, Robert Wadham, and William Young. Also included are many anonymous pieces in tablature and, in staff notation, two sets of divisions (one by Henry Butler), and the bass part of a piece by John Banister. Reversing the volume (ff. 38-77) is a copy of the first edition of Christopher Simpson, The Division-Violist (1659). 17th cent. ownership inscriptions of William Cartwright and John Wray, of Brant Boughton, co. Linc. (ff. i, iii). Purchased at Sotheby's, 11 May 1977, lot 227.
Paper; ff. iv+77. 305 x 105mm. Contemporary dark brown calf binding with gilt ruled panel and thistle corner pieces on the covers.
