SIR EDWARD ELGAR: 'Arthur', incidental music to Lawrence Binyon's play 'King Arthur'; 1923. Autograph full score, with many autograph alterations in red ink and pencil and conductor's markings in blue crayon and pencil. Imperfect, lacking two leaves after f. 62, which are now Add. 58061, ff. 16, 17. The music was first performed at the Old Vic, 12 March 1923, but never published. Included (f. 17) are typewritten cross-references from the printed text of Binyon's poem to the manuscript musical score. Formerly in the possession of Joseph Lewis, conductor, who subsequently gave it to Alan Barlow. Purchased at Sotheby's, 11 May 1977, lot 199.
