MUGGLETONIAN ARCHIVES. Archives of the London Church of the sect founded by John Reeve (b.1608, d.1658) and Lodowick Muggleton (b.1609, d.1698); 17th-20th cent. Partly printed. The records comprise correspondence, treatises, religious verse and accounts. Further Muggletonian treatises are preserved in Add. 42505, 61950. Letters, treatises and verse were frequently copied in manuscript by members of the sect for their personal use, and many copies bear the names of individual owners. Many also bear annotations indicating the existence of a centralised collection by 1772, part of which came from John Nicholls. The collection was enlarged in the first half of 19th century mainly through the Muggletonian printers Joseph and Isaac Frost, who also examined many of the volumes for unpublished works in Feb. and March 1831. A brief description is given in A. Gordon, 'Ancient and Modern Muggletonians', Proceedings of the Literary and Philosophical Society of Liverpool, xxiv (1870). Most items bear a late 19th cent. pasted-down white label with blue edging on which is written in ink a letter followed by an Arabic number. This marking is noted in the descriptions of each volume, as are similar earlier 19th cent. numbers and some late 18th cent. large ink numbers. In general see C. Hill, B. Reay and W.
