JEAN THOMAS: treatise on his invention of locks for canals and harbours, with coloured diagrams; early 18th cent. French. Fair copy. Added (f. 1) is a note in Thomas's hand presenting the treatise to Edward Southwell (1671-1730). Supplements Add. 9708, 9709, 9748, 9749, 11759, 19670, 21122, 21123, 21131, 21494, 21495, 34329-34346, 34349, 34350, 34358, 47038, 58219, 58220, 60581-60583, Egerton 1627-1633. A letter of Thomas to Southwell in 1716 (Add. 38713, f. 87) relates to the building of canals in Ireland. Purchased in 1836 together with other papers of the Southwell family from the London dealer Thorpe (his catalogue, item 1277) by Sir Thomas Phillipps, Bart. (Phillipps MS. 8698). Acquired by the Patent Office Library, Sept. 1913 (Ac. No. 48827). Transferred from the Science Reference Library, June 1978.
