Printed and handwritten fragments used to wrap the Anderson Pontifical

This volume contains early modern printed fragments which were originally pasted together to form wrappers for the Anderson Pontifical (Add. MS 57337), which have now been separated.
The volume contains:
f. 1r: piece of parchment folded in the shape of a book. Faded text on the spine reads 'popish calling... devil';
f. 1v: faded or erased text;
f. 2r: two fragments with unidentified symbols, some Greek (?) letters, and the date 'July 14';
f 2v: first person account mentioning the 'harbour of Peeterhead', in a 17th-century hand;
f. 3r: badly damaged fragment with large script;
ff. 4-13v: fragments from a volume on civil law, printed in Italy (?) around 1500 on parchment;
ff. 14-17v. fragments from a 17th-century copy of Orlando Furioso;
ff. 18-26v. fragments from a copy of Louis Daniel Le Comte, Nouveaux mémoires sur l’état présent de la Chine, 1st edn (Paris: J. Anisson, 1696).

Provenance:
Rev. Hugh Anderson (d. 1749), minister of the parish of Drainie , near Elgin, Morayshire: inscribed 'Hugh: H. I leave this book to ... Wm Mercer or his son Hugh... written my hand att Kinn[edar] May 5th, 1741... Hugh Anderson' (f. 13v). This note was later cancelled.
William Mercer and his son Hugh Mercer: bequeathed to him by Anderson on 5 May 1741; note now crossed (f. 13v).
Sir Robert Gordon of Gordonstoun (b. 1696, d. 1772), 4th baronet: bequeathed to him by Anderson on 6 October 1741 (Additional MS 57337, f. 144r).
Brodie Castle, Forres: found in a stables, June 1970 (see Sotheby and Co., Catalogue of Western Manuscripts (12 July 1971), lot 35); sold at Sotheby's, London, 12 July 1971, lot 35.
Acquired for the British Museum in September 1971.
