MARMADUKE TUNSTALL (b.1743, d.1790): notebook of the naturalist Marmaduke Tunstall, al. Marmaduke Constable or Valentine Tunstall, whilst a student at the English College, Douai; 1760. Latin. Notes relating to the study of logic under William Gibson (later consecrated Vicar Apostolic of the Northern District of England, 1790), see f. 171v. Signed and dated by Tunstall (f. i). The alias 'Valentine Tunstall' was adopted, in accordance with common practice among English Catholics studying abroad, in order to protect relatives in England. See J. Kirk, Biographies of English Catholics in the 18th Century (1909), p. 55. Purchased from – Henderson, Esq., 18 Sept. 1971.
