JULIAN COLLECTION. Letters and notes collected by the Rev. John Julian, D.D., LL.D. (b.1839, d.1913) whilst compiling his Dictionary of Hymnology, published by John Murray, London, 1892; bef. 1721-1893, n.d. Partly printed. Including some complete hymns, biographical or autobiographical notes on the writers, and answers to questions about circumstances of composition, used only selectively in the published work. A substantial amount of material (Section A below) belonged previously to the hymnologist Daniel Sedgwick (b.1814, d.1879). Julian's notes for part of the New Supplement to the Dictionary, published in the revised edition of 1907, are Add. 69037, and further notes made in connection with the revision by the Assistant Editor, the Rev. James Mearns, Vicar of Rushden, are Add. 69438, 69439. See also the MS. catalogue of Julian's library at pressmark 11927.k.1. and for collections of hymns owned by him, see Add. 49198 and 56063. The present manuscripts were formerly preserved at Church House, Dean's Yard, Westminster, from which the hymnological collection was presented to the British Museum in 1949 (see also Add. 50888-50900). Transferred from the Department of Printed Books and incorporated in Feb. 1972.

Paper. Twenty-five volumes. The letters, etc., were mounted by Julian on leaves measuring 255 x 155mm. Uniform dark blue half-bindings, with spines lettered in gold, the Sedgwick MSS. bearing red labels. As follows;–
