FRANCIS PLACE: transcript of the proceedings and evidence against Queen Caroline to deprive her of the title and prerogatives of Queen Consort and to dissolve her marriage with George IV, owned and annotated by Francis Place; 1820. Printed. Includes list of witnesses in support and in defence of the bill. Among those questioned are the Earl of Guilford, Lord Glenbervie, Lady Charlotte Lindsay, Sir William Gell and Joseph Planta. Those questioned at length include Teodoro Majoochi, liver servant of the Princess, and Louisa Demont, previously in the service of the Prince of Wales. Book-label of Francis Place on inside cover (f. ii). Place's manuscript comments are sometimes scathing and support the assertion in Graham Wallas, Life of Francis Place (1918), pp. 150-152 that Place 'helped to direct the agitation'. Belonged to Sir Thomas Phillipps (MS. 24539, see f. i). Also owned by – Putt (?) (inscription on f. i). Purchased at Sotheby's, 28 Nov. 1972, lot 256.
Two volumes; ff. iv+271, ii+262. 215 x 355mm.
