AENEAS SYLVIUS: De Duobus Amantibus (ff. 1-35v), composed in Vienna by Aeneas Sylvius (Pope Pius II, 1458-1464) as Imperial Secretary (1444-1446), with other texts including Epistola de Amoris Remedio (ff. 36-41) and L. Bruni, De Amore Giustardi et Sigismunde (ff. 42-49v), followed by verses, including De Bonis Prelatis Gallo Appropriatis (f. 51); Italy, circa 1460-1465. Latin. This MS. precedes, by a few years, the first printed edition of De Duobus Amantibus (Cologne, circa 1470). Purchased from Maggs Bros., cat. 948, no. 1, 30 Jan. 1973.
Paper; ff. ii+86. 210 x 150mm. Gatherings (10) of 10, except ii10 (lacks 10, blank), iv10 (lacks 7-10, blank), v10 (lacks 1-2 and 9-10, blank), vi10 (lacks 10, blank), x10 (lacks 1, 4, 7, 10). Watermarks, compare Briquet, Les Filigraines nos. 3270, 6689-6690, 9056-9058. Ruled (single bounding lines) in hard-point for single columns of 28 lines. Written space 135 x 95mm. Script is a humanistic cursive book script. Catchwords. Leaf signatures. Guide-letters. Red initials, with a poorly executed major decorated initial U, in gold and colours (f. 1).
