FORGERIES: miscellaneous collection of forged letters and papers of famous persons from 11th to 19th centuries; 19th-20th cent. Partly Latin and German. Many of the forgeries bear the stamp of the Forgery Collection of James Tregaskis. Purchased from T. & L. Hannas, of Bromley, 26 June 1973.
Paper and parchment; ff. 47. Various sizes. Arranged in chronological order.
1. f. 1. Lanfranc, Archbishop of Canterbury (1070-1089): Latin document on parchment, with the remains of seal ties, bearing signature in red. Said to have been found in Mercery Lane, Canterbury (on card mount, f. 2) .
2. ff. 2-17. Martin Luther: letter to Dr Hermann and religious verses; 1524-1543. German. Included are English and French translations of the letter.
3. f. 18. Philipp Melanchthon: copy of Isaiah 59:21; 1543. German.
4. f. 20. Alexander Pope: letter to Mr [John] Arbuthnot; n.d. Apparently purchased by Tregaskis in 1934.
5. f. 21. Joshua Reynolds: subscription request on behalf of Richard Wilson signed by Reynolds as President of the Royal Academy and by other Academicians; 21 Feb. 1778. Purported to be from the Duke of Sutherland's collection.
6. f. 25. Horatio Nelson: letter to Pilford; 14 Nov. 1782.
7. f. 28. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe: poem 'Eigenthum'; 22 June 1822. German.
8. ff. 31-35. William Henry Hudson: letter to Mr Keary, together with part of a MS. of A Crystal Age; n.d. Sent to Tregaskis in 1926, purportedly from Mrs E. Milne, of Paris.
9. ff. 36-47. 'The Grub-Street Journal' No. 41 (Summer 1973), being the printed catalogue of T. & L. Hannas, of Bromley, Kent, in which items 1-8 are listed as No. 163 c, d, h, k, m, n, o, p.
