Miniature of the Crucifixion ('The Wyndham Payne Crucifixion')
- Scope & Content:
-
A single leaf of a miniature of the Crucifixion, blank on the verso, probably excised from a Missal (perhaps facing the Canon of the Mass, or a prayer of consecration) as suggested by the narrower right and wider left margins (typical of the verso of a leaf in a book), and the cross in the lower margin, which the priest would kiss during the performance of the Mass. Seven holes along the lower margin and tears along the upper margin with rusty stains suggest that the leaf was once nailed to a support.
The miniature has been arttributed to Herman Scheerre, by Rickert, Painting in Britain (1954) and Turner, Wyndham Payne Crucifixion (1976), but questioned by Scott, Later Gothic Manuscripts (1997).

Extract from the Catalogue of Additions (2001): 'THE WYNDHAM PAYNE CRUCIFIXION: miniature of the Crucifixion, probably from a Missal (perhaps facing the Canon, or prayer of consecration); England [London?], early 15th cent. [second decade?]. Latin. Painted, probably by Herman Scheerre, in International Gothic style, it is a product of the Northern Renaissance, reminiscent of contemporary panel-painting in its dimensions and style. Ferrous stains and holes indicate that it was once attached to a support, suggesting that it may have been intended as a devotional piece, perhaps for a small altar, rather than as part of a book. The leaf was first made public and attributed to Scheerre by M. Rickert, Painting in Britain: the Middle Ages (1954; 2nd edn., 1965). This attribution was accepted by D. H. Turner in 'The Wyndham Payne Crucifixion', B.L.J. 2, no. 1 (1976), pp. 8-26, and has gained general credence, but it has been questioned by K. L. Scott in Later Gothic Manuscripts (1997), no. 25. Purchased about 1943 by Mr. A. Wyndham Payne (d.1974) of Sidmouth, co. Devon, from an antique shop in Cirencester which had allegedly bought it as a reproduction from a local clergyman. Purchased at Christie's, 5 Dec. 1973, lot 81, with the aid of the National Art-Collections Fund and the Pilgrim Trust.
Vellum; f. 1. 373 x 260mm. Verso blank.
The figure-style is monumental, graceful and emotive and is set against a tooled gilded ground. Christ is flanked by the Virgin and St. John (holding his gospel-book), with four angels collecting the blood which flows from Christ's wounds in chalices, with skull and bones at the foot of the tau cross. The miniature is set in a rectilinear border with corner-pieces containing the evangelist symbols with scrolls, and with foliate extensions from the centre of each side of the frame. There is a cross flory below. Stylistic affiliations exist to two astrological-medical figures in Brussels, Bibl. Roy. 4862-69 (Scott, no. 24) and to the Big Bible, Royal 1.E.ix (Scott, no. 26).'
