SIR FREDERIC MADDEN, Keeper of Manuscripts, British Museum: 'Extracts and Memoranda in reference to Matthew Paris, the Historian of St. Alban's and his Works'; 1860 (f. 1). The notebook consists chiefly of passages drawn from published work on the life and times of Paris, with Madden's comments, prefaced by a list (f. 2) of the authorities cited. Madden compiled it when preparing his edition of Paris's Historia Anglorum, or Historia Minor, begun in June 1860 and published as no. 44 in the Rolls Series, 3 vols., (1866-1869). Further transcripts, etc., are now preserved as Bodleian MSS. Add. D. 86-88 and Cambridge University Library Add. MS. 3019, while further papers were offered in Puttick and Simpson's sale, 15 Aug. 1882, lot 72. For other personal papers of Madden see Add. 57341, 57342, above. Purchased from Dawson of Pall Mall, 28 Jan. 1974.
Paper; ff. iv+128. 338mm. x 220mm. Paper watermarked with arms of Zeeland above legend 'Zelandia' and countermarked 'H F de Charro'. Additional leaves (ff. 37, 39, 40, 42) tipped in. Armorial bookplate (f. ii) of N. E. S. A. Hamilton, Madden's assistant at the British Museum, pasted inside front cover above printed extract (f. iii) from unidentified sale-cat., lot 805. Bound in light brown grained book cloth, spine incorporating blank green label with gilt rules.
